In the fourth match of IPL 2024 scheduled for March 24 at 3:30 PM, the Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants will lock horns for the fourth time in the history of the Indian Premier League. This encounter will mark the second occasion where both teams compete for IPL points in Jaipur.

In the first season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, Rajasthan Royals (RR) clinched the title, becoming the inaugural champions. However, they’ve only made it to the final once after that, which was in 2022. That year also saw the debut of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL. Despite being newcomers, LSG managed to reach the playoffs in their first appearance, and they repeated this achievement in 2023.

Looking back at IPL 2022-23, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants clashed twice in Mumbai, as the league stage of the 2022 edition was held entirely in Maharashtra.

At the Wankhede Stadium, Shimron Hetmyer’s performance led Rajasthan Royals to a total of 165-6. Trent Boult’s remarkable start, taking two wickets with the first two balls of the Lucknow innings, set the tone. Yuzvendra Chahal further tightened the grip with figures of 4-41, limiting Lucknow to 162-8.
The second encounter at Brabourne Stadium saw Rajasthan emerging victorious again. Youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal played crucial innings, scoring 41 (in 29 balls) and 39 (in 18 balls) respectively, guiding their team to 178-6. Boult’s impactful start continued as he struck with the first two balls of his second over. Despite Deepak Hooda’s valiant 59 off 39 balls, Lucknow fell short, managing only 154-8.

With the pandemic becoming a distant memory, the IPL returned to being played across India in 2023. In that season, the Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants met only once, at Rajasthan’s home ground in Jaipur, where an unusual collapse led to Rajasthan’s first defeat against Lucknow.

Lucknow’s Kyle Mayers played a significant innings, scoring 51 runs off 42 balls at the top of the order, helping his team reach a total of 154-7. Rajasthan’s Yashasvi Jaiswal (44 off 35 balls) and Jos Buttler (40 off 41 balls) provided a solid start, adding 87 runs for the opening stand in 69 balls. However, Rajasthan’s fortunes took a turn with four quick wickets, bringing Devdutt Padikkal and Riyan Parag together. Despite the target being a manageable 51 runs off 29 balls, Rajasthan failed to get going and lost by 10 runs.

Pitch Report for RR vs LSG at Sawai Mansingh Stadium

Expect a lively pitch at the Royals’ stronghold, Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, promising plenty of action for batsmen. Known for its flat surfaces conducive to fluent strokeplay, this ground typically witnesses an abundance of boundaries, including fours and sixes, despite its larger boundary dimensions.

Nevertheless, bowlers, both pacers and spinners, could find support from the pitch’s spongy bounce and subtle turn, especially in afternoon matches during the tournament in Indian conditions. Adapting to these conditions intelligently could prove advantageous for both bowling units.
